The record
Tennessee's first maximum-security prison, in the remote mountains of Morgan County near Petros, established in 1896 as a prison and coal mine and operating until 2009. Known as 'the end of the line,' it held some of the state's most dangerous inmates, including James Earl Ray - who was part of a 1977 escape attempt (recaptured within three days). No death penalty was carried out here, but inmates died from mine work and inmate violence. Since 2018 it has operated as a tourist attraction with tours, a distillery, gift shop, concerts, and events.
