The record
Pennsylvania's first public facility to house the mentally ill, opened in 1851 as the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital through the reform efforts of Dorothea Dix, on a hill overlooking Harrisburg in Susquehanna Township. Renamed Harrisburg State Hospital in 1937, it operated until 2006. It is a National Register historic district ('City on the Hill') of roughly 30 architecturally significant buildings; some remain in governmental or institutional use.
