Hill View Manor opened on a hilltop above New Castle in October 1926 as the Lawrence County Home for the Aged — a county poor farm that housed the elderly, the destitute, and the mentally ill, many of whom worked the surrounding farm. Over the decades it served as an infirmary, a shelter, and at times the county morgue, and in 1977 was renamed Hill View Manor while operating as a skilled nursing home until financial trouble closed it in February 2004. Its history is a somber one: residents came here as wards of the county with nowhere else to go, a pauper cemetery of largely unmarked graves lies behind the building, and several residents are documented to have died during its operation. After closing, the 80,000-square-foot building was reopened as a historic investigation venue rather than left to decay; it is actively owned, staffed, and monitored today, and offers public and private paranormal investigations, guided tours, and events.
