The record
Linville Manor stands in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on one of the state's earliest land grants — originally the Bowie family's Thorpland Plantation, established in the 1600s. The original home burned in an 1849 fire; Sarah Marie Bowie rebuilt the current manor in 1852 on the same foundation, above the brick-walled basement that survived the blaze. Once known as the Bowie-Johnson House, the estate has become widely regarded as one of Maryland's most haunted properties, and it operates today as a historic bed-and-breakfast that hosts private tours and overnight paranormal investigations.
