The record
Built by F.O. Stanley, the inventor behind the Stanley Steamer, and opened in 1909 as a grand summer destination at the edge of what is now Rocky Mountain National Park. Construction began in 1907, and the hotel has been a National Register historic district since 1977. Stephen King's 1974 stay in room 217 inspired The Shining. The hotel remains in operation and runs a well-known tour program.
