The record
A Gothic-style former state prison in Moundsville, West Virginia, opened in 1876 and operating until 1995. Construction was authorized and begun in 1866, after Governor Arthur I. Boreman had spent three years pressing the West Virginia Legislature for a state penitentiary. During its nearly 120 years it was the site of riots, fires, and nearly 100 executions. It is now open for history and paranormal tours.
