The record
Built around 1797 as a stagecoach stop on the Chambersburg–Gettysburg road, the Cashtown Inn took its name from its first innkeeper, Peter Marck, who insisted travelers pay in cash. In late June 1863, days before the battle, Confederate General A.P. Hill made the inn his headquarters as the 22,000 men of his Third Corps camped nearby; Generals Henry Heth and John Imboden also used it, and its basement served as a field hospital. Historians have claimed more Confederate soldiers passed through its door than any building north of Richmond. It operates today as an inn and restaurant with seven rooms. Staff and guests have long reported doors and objects moving on their own, and a well-known old photograph of the porch is said by some to show a faint extra figure.
