The record
The Doss House sits in Loretto, a small Cambria County town whose early history is tied to Prince Demetrius Gallitzin, the missionary priest who helped shape the settlement around 1799. Built in 1810, the house is described as one of the first homes on land historically connected to the Shawnee, Lenape, Asswikales, and Mingo peoples, and over the generations it served as the residence and workplace of several of the town's professionals — a doctor, an undertaker, a dentist, and Loretto's only barber, whose shop was later joined to the main house. Today the home is privately owned and lovingly preserved, opened to the public since 2024 for daytime tours and overnight investigations conducted by appointment, with many of its original artifacts still displayed inside.
