The record
The Cambria County Old Stone Jail rises in the center of Ebensburg, a Gothic Revival fortress of locally cut sandstone built in 1872 to the designs of architect Edward Haviland, with a central tower, pointed-arch windows, and a full twenty-two-foot perimeter wall. It served as the county prison for well over a century — an annex was added in 1910 to ease severe overcrowding — until it was abandoned in 1997. Its history includes the execution of eleven men by hanging between 1872 and 1909, a documented and sober part of the building's record. Among its enduring stories is that of Michael 'Old Smitty' Smith, an inmate said in local legend to have vanished from his cell before his scheduled 1884 execution; the tale is presented as legend rather than established fact. Purchased in 2022 by a local developer and now under a multi-year restoration, the jail has reopened to the public for historic and paranormal tours and overnight investigations, and reported experiences within its cell blocks are carried as visitor accounts rather than documented fact.
