The record
Established in 1815 as a tavern and acquired by Frederick Herr in 1828, Herr Tavern sat on the ridge west of town where the first day's fighting opened on July 1, 1863. It became one of the first Confederate field hospitals of the battle; three of its rooms reportedly served as surgical rooms. It also has a documented history as a stop for travelers and is described in local histories as a station on the Underground Railroad. Now an inn and fine-dining restaurant, it is among the town's more frequently reported haunted stays — guests describe disembodied cries, a soldier who seeks a drink at the bar, and the sound of a woman singing to a child.
