The record
This brick duplex on Baltimore Street was the home of Georgia Wade McClellan. During the battle her sister, 20-year-old Mary Virginia "Jennie" Wade, sheltered here to help care for Georgia's newborn and to bake bread for Union soldiers. On the morning of July 3, 1863, a stray bullet passed through two doors and struck Jennie in the back, killing her instantly — she was the only civilian killed during the three-day Battle of Gettysburg. Soldiers moved her body to the cellar; she was later buried in the garden beside the house. The building is now a museum, furnished to the period, its walls still marked by battle damage. Visitors and staff report footsteps, the smell of fresh bread, and glimpses of a woman in period dress said to be Jennie herself.
