After the war, this Baltimore Street property became the National Soldiers' Orphans' Homestead, a home founded to care for children orphaned by the Civil War — its poignant purpose grew directly out of the battle fought at its doorstep. The site later became notorious for the alleged cruelty of one of its matrons toward the children in her charge, a documented chapter of institutional abuse.
