The record
The hotel at 1 Lincoln Square began in 1797 as Scott's Tavern, built by James Scott, and passed through names — the Indian Queen, then the McClellan House — as the town grew around it. During the battle in July 1863 it was pressed into service as a field hospital for wounded soldiers. It stands directly across the square from the David Wills House, where Abraham Lincoln finished the Gettysburg Address. Restored and still operating as a hotel, it has drawn ghost stories since the early 20th century: guests and staff report a Civil War-era nurse called Rachel, a woman in a ballroom gown, and doors and drawers that open on their own.
