The record
Borden Flats Light stands offshore in the Taunton River at the edge of Mount Hope Bay, a cast-iron "sparkplug" lighthouse built on a caisson in 1881 to mark a dangerous reef at the river's mouth. It was automated in 1963 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. In private hands in recent decades, it has been operated as an unusual overnight destination where guests stay in the keeper's quarters, reached by boat from the Borden Light Marina on the mainland. Because the light sits alone in the river, its map location is the lighthouse itself, while guest check-in is at the marina. Overnight keepers and visitors have reported a lingering presence, tied in local lore to a former lightkeeper and to a young woman said to have drowned nearby.
