The record

On the morning of August 4, 1892, Andrew Borden and his wife Abby were found murdered in their home on Second Street in Fall River, each killed with a hatchet. Andrew's 32-year-old daughter Lizzie became the prime suspect; her 1893 trial in New Bedford was a national sensation, and she was acquitted. No one else was ever charged, and the case remains officially unsolved — one of the most famous unsolved crimes in American history. The Victorian house (its historical address was 92 Second Street, now renumbered 230) was later restored to its 1892 appearance and today operates as a bed-and-breakfast and museum, offering house tours, ghost tours, and overnight stays in the rooms tied to the case. It's widely described as one of the most haunted houses in the United States; guests and staff report footsteps, moving objects, and doors that open on their own, with the room once used by the family's maid, Bridget Sullivan, among the most frequently cited.
