The record
At the tip of Clark's Point in New Bedford stands a Civil War–era granite fort, designed by Robert E. Lee during his prewar service as a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer. Construction began in 1857 but was unfinished at the war's outbreak, so in 1861 the city built a temporary earthwork nearby — Fort Taber, named for New Bedford's mayor — to guard the harbor and its whaling fleet against feared Confederate raids; it served until the stone fort was garrisoned in 1863. In 1898 the whole reservation was renamed Fort Rodman for Lt. Col. William Logan Rodman, the highest-ranking New Bedford native killed in the war. The site is now part of a 47-acre coastal park with a military museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors and staff at the fort and museum report cold spots and a sense of being watched among the stone corridors and batteries.
