The record

Opened in 1829, Eastern State pioneered the 'separate system' of solitary confinement and its wagon-wheel plan was copied by hundreds of prisons worldwide. It held notable inmates including Al Capone and Willie Sutton before closing in 1971. It reopened for tours in 1994 and is preserved as a 'stabilized ruin.'
