The record
Laurel Hill Cemetery opened in 1836 on a bluff above the Schuylkill River in what is now East Falls, designed by the Scottish architect John Notman as one of the first architecturally planned cemeteries in America and the second rural cemetery in the country after Boston's Mount Auburn. Conceived as much as a public garden and outdoor sculpture park as a burial ground — it drew tens of thousands of visitors in its early decades and helped inspire Fairmount Park — it is a National Historic Landmark, added to the National Register in 1977. Among its many notable interments are George Meade, the Union commander at Gettysburg, several Titanic victims, and the astronomer and first U.S. Mint director David Rittenhouse. The cemetery is still active and open to the public, and runs its own walking tours and seasonal after-dark programming; reported paranormal accounts are part of the site's tour tradition rather than documented fact.
