The record

Fort Mifflin, on Mud Island in the Delaware River below Philadelphia, was begun in 1771 and became the site of one of the Revolutionary War's most consequential stands. In November 1777 a garrison of roughly 400 American soldiers held the fort against a British fleet for weeks in what is often described as the largest bombardment of the war, buying time for Washington's army to reach winter quarters at Valley Forge before the fort fell. Rebuilt in the 1790s, it served as an active military post into the 20th century and was later used as a Civil War prison, where soldiers were held in harsh conditions — a documented chapter the site does not sensationalize. It is a National Historic Landmark, open to visitors March through December, with original casemates, ramparts, and a powder magazine still standing.
