The record
Oak Grove Cemetery was established in 1855 and laid out as a Victorian garden cemetery in the manner of Mount Auburn, designed by Josiah Brown; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Its granite Gothic Revival entrance arch was cut from local Fall River granite, and the grounds — expanded from 47 acres to over 100 — hold the graves of many of the city's 19th-century mill-owning families. It is best known as the burial place of Lizzie Borden, along with her father Andrew, her stepmother Abby, and her sister Emma; the cemetery marks the route to the Borden plot for the many visitors who come to see it. Still owned and operated by the City of Fall River, it is open to the public and offered as a documented stop on the city's history and paranormal circuit.
