Pennhurst State School and Hospital operated in Spring City from 1908 to 1987 as a state institution for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. What was built as a model facility became one of the most documented cases of institutional abuse in American history: a 1968 NBC news report by Bill Baldini exposed severe overcrowding and neglect, and the resulting federal case, Halderman v. Pennhurst State School, ran from 1974 to 1987 and helped establish the legal rights of people with disabilities in institutional settings, contributing directly to deinstitutionalization nationwide. Residents who died at the institution are buried on the grounds, many marked by numbers rather than names. Since 2010 part of the campus has operated as a commercial haunted attraction alongside a museum and preservation effort — a use that disability-rights advocates have publicly criticized as trivializing the suffering the site represents.
