The record
The Seamen's Bethel, built in 1832 by the New Bedford Port Society, is the chapel that whalers traditionally visited before setting out to sea. Herman Melville worshipped here, and immortalized it in Moby-Dick (1851) as the "Whaleman's Chapel" — the memorial cenotaphs on its walls, honoring sailors and fishermen lost at sea, are the same tradition Melville described. It sits in the heart of what is now the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, a contributing property to the New Bedford Historic District, and remains open to the public. As a place built around loss at sea and lined with memorials to the dead, it carries a somber weight that anchors its place on the city's history and paranormal circuit; reported experiences here are part of that lore rather than documented fact.
