The record

The Asa Packer Mansion sits on a terrace above downtown Jim Thorpe, overlooking the Lehigh River, an Italianate villa completed in 1861 for Asa Packer, the coal and railroad magnate who founded the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Lehigh University. Designed by the Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan and built over a cast-iron frame, its 18 rooms retain the family's original Victorian furnishings and finishes — the house is not a restoration but a preservation, kept essentially as the Packers left it. When Asa's daughter Mary Packer Cummings died in 1912, she willed the mansion and its contents to the borough as a memorial to her father, which is why it survives intact today. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985 and operates as a house museum with guided tours; any reported paranormal accounts are part of local lore rather than documented fact.
