The record
The Old Jail Museum occupies the former Carbon County Jail on West Broadway, built in 1871 and used as a working prison until 1995. It is best known as the site where several members of the Molly Maguires — Irish-American coal miners accused of organizing violent resistance to mine owners — were hanged in 1877 after trials that relied heavily on Pinkerton detective testimony and coal-company prosecutors. The trials have since been widely questioned: the Pennsylvania House and Senate passed resolutions in 2005 and 2006 describing them as inherently unconstitutional, and many historians now regard the men as, at least in part, casualties of an anti-labor, anti-immigrant campaign rather than proven murderers. The jail preserves its original cells, a recreated gallows on the execution spot, and Cell 17, where a handprint on the wall is said in local tradition to have been left by Alexander Campbell as a declaration of his innocence before his execution — a mark reported to reappear after cleaning and repainting, presented here as enduring local legend rather than established fact. Now owned and operated by a local family, the jail runs guided history tours and seasonal ghost experiences; reported paranormal accounts are part of that tradition.
